Why does the confiuration wizard run every time I start an Office 2007 standard application. This is insane. I thought eventually the wizards would chill out but no luck. Every time I start Word, excel or even an 3rd party program that uses Office 2007, the wizard comes on.

Try running a repair of Office setup. I believe it is an option when you insert the Office 2007 CD/DVD in the drive.

I have. I have even completely removed every little hint of any kind of office program on my computer and then cleanly installed office 2007 and it still does the exact same thing (on both my computers-both having Vista). The repair has no effect on this problem. Thanks though.

I have exactly the same issue. For me it appears to affect Word and Excel, but not Outlook. I have the Enterprise 2007 edition installed.
I've seen lost of discussion about this issue elsewhere but no one seems to have an answer. I've tired a few things buut almost at a point now that I am considering re-installing Vista.
For info, I previously had the Standard 2007 Trail installed. I wonder if this is related.
Has anyone been able to fix this annoying problem?

Actually, that is what my computer is doing as well: Excel, Word, etc makes the wizard start but Outlook does not.

Hi,
If you want help with this, post your Application Event logs related to dates/times of starting Office.
Please post them as plain text.

Hi,
Everyone who is having this problem appears to be running Office Enterprise 2007? Is that right?
I guess it's a bit rich to call it "Enterprise" if the apps don't even start properly:)

Try and use the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility and see if it will solve this issue with the configuration wizard. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 -- Peter

Disk Diagnostic — Errors in system event log The Disk Diagnostic found evidence of hardware errors. Instability in your Microsoft Office programs may be the result of these hardware errors.
This result occurs if one of the following has happened recently:
The Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (SMART) feature of your hard disk has found errors. SMART is a feature that some disk drive manufacturers provide to give users advance notice of potential hard disk failure. Microsoft Office Diagnostics has found blocked-out (failed) sectors on your hard disk. Microsoft Office has had trouble accessing files from the hard disk; it needs these files to function properly. We recommend that you do the following:
Check the results of other diagnostics, and follow the instructions for resolving any issues that the diagnostics have reported. After you resolve those issues, run Microsoft Office Diagnostics again to see if this Disk Diagnostic issue is resolved. If you continue to get this result, contact someone, such as the vendor of your computer or hard disk.

Hi C.S.,
Is this a Vista 32 bit or 64 bit installation? The Registry key you mentioned, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pip\ wouldn't necessarily be used by Office (which is 32-bit) in a Windows 64-bit environment, even if it's there and could create a permissions issue.
These steps may be helpful to you in resolving this (have one prior instance that was resolved through these)
1- Reregister MSIEXEC (.exe) [MS Windows Installer]
2- Uninstall Microsoft Office 2007.
3- In the registry take ownership and delete the following key: HKCR\WOW6432Node\.pip
4- Install Office 2007 again (might want to restart the PC first).

Hi Chad,
I asked for your Application Event Log, that looks like your System Event Log?
Either way, it looks like you've got bigger problems than Office 2007. This warning is saying your hard-drive is heading for a crash!

FIXED!
After doing a fresh install of Vista, the problem has now been resolved for me!
My best guess was that the various beta and trial version of office 2007 had left some nasty things lying around.

I'm hoping someone can help me here as I have the exact problem after running Office XP and Enterprise 2007 together and then removing Office XP. The OS is Vista Ultimate and I DON'T wish to re-install the OS just to solve an Office issue. My event log has produced numerous warnings, on of the more significant is :
Detection of product '{90120000-0030-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}', feature 'ProductFiles', component '{6252B847-BADA-43D4-9252-E39767FA40A1}' failed. The resource 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pip\' does not exist.
I tried to access the HCR\.pip\ key in Regedit and receive the following message:
"Error Opening Key ...pip can not be opened. An error is preventing this key from being opened. Details: Access is denied."
I have tried the Windows Installer Clean up utility to remove all traces of Office XP, cleaned the registry, reinstalled Office 2007 three times and still have the install/configuring messages popping up upon loading the Office programs.. ANY information that might be helpful would possibly save me from doing some serious damage to an otherwise new notebook and would also be most appreciated !!!

Anyone have any luck with this seeminly common problem? It may be easy for some to reinstall Vista but I have so many applications that would need to be installed, its just not feasible for me. I would rather not use Office at all than have to reinstall the entire operating system -- again! Anybody out there in Microsoft land have any answers to these beyond annoying issues?

Wish I could help Chad but everythings seems to have failed and I'm not getting any further information from anyone. I really hope this isn't being ignored...

Well a serious amount of hard work and peserverance has paid off... <insert ear-to-ear grin here>!!! I have resolved the issue on my computer and am confident the following steps should do the same for others experiencing this problem. After quite a bit of messing around I was fairly sure that it the problem was due to a permissions issue in Vista. Checking the Event Viewer numerous times and seeing the references to registry keys that couldn't be accessed helped confirm this. Trying to alter the permissions on some of these keys I also noticed that nearly every Office relevant key would give an "access is denied" when attempting to open them. None of these keys had any permissions granted to them which struck me as strange. I attempted to replace all permissions in the HKCR folder but found regedit would either crash or return a failed message and the permissions would not be changed. I was now determined to have the access that I deserved as an administrator on my own computer !! SubInACL utility gave me the power I needed, and all permissions were changed and the configuration messages disappeared. It was probably overkill in assigning permissions to every key in the registry but I was unsure of what keys Office needed to access so I thought it best to alter them all (this may be a security concern to some so it might be worth coming up with a list of keys needed). To answer the question why it was necessary to gain back permission of these keys in the first place is beyond me, I'm not a programmer or developer but I hope someone who is can shed some light on the issue. Whether the problem lies with Vista or Office I don't know either. But anyway, onto the steps that are oh so important... use them at your own risk - I can't guarantee they'll work and you could possible do damage:
- download and install SubInACL (download from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en ) - open notepad and paste in the following text
cd /d "%programfiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools" subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f / grant=system=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f / grant=system=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f / grant=system=f subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f / grant=system=f subinacl /subdirectories %windir%\*.* /grant=administrators=f / grant=system=f
- save in notepad as fix_office_permissions.cmd - double click the newly created file and allow to run (took about 5-10 mins on my system)
To the best of my knowledge these are the only steps on the internet that deal specifically with this problem so I would love to know if they work for others... Cheers and best of luck all !!!

That was very helpful :) thank you very much I had almost given up, and was about to downgrade to Office xp and never try 2007 again. I had the same problem and after examining my events numerous times I found that it had to be a registry problem, either a setting that was wrong or an access problem, then I tried to alter the rights and I also got some errors , well with your batch I finally got my office 2007 to work, thank you very much There was some minor errors after I ran the batch file, but a vista repair take care of them
Here is my story with the ms support team I called MS support 3 weeks ago and they have called and emailed me about 5 - 10 times with all sorts of solutions, and every time I have told them that if they wanted to solve the issue it would be in a registry issue, then they called me on Friday and asked me to be patient as they needed to go through all the programs on my pc (I already send them a log of installed programs on my pc) and for the first time I lost my temper with them and told them that it had nothing what so ever to do with the programs on my pc, and again I told them to send my case to a office programmer team and forget about the usual fiddling around support and not to call me again until they had send my case to some ppl whit some knowledge on the matter, now I can’t wait to tell them what the solution is

Dear lloyd Sheen
Didn't Kim Windsor's batch file help you with the problem?

Nope no change. Still reconfigures each time it runs.

Lloyd, not sure if you're still interested, but today I stumbled across something unusual that may just explain the reason the batch file didn't help you. I normally run Vista with User Account Control (UAC) turned off (no need for explanations I hope!!) but was required to turn it on to install a network printer - crazy Yes, but this is Microsoft's documented answer to a printer that won't install - but anyway, after enabling it I noticed the Office 2007 config screens again !!! I had all the exact errors that I originally had so I disabled UAC again and everything came good. So Lloyd I'm thinking that maybe you had UAC enabled when you tried running the batch file. I would recommend disabling it if this is the case (life will be much more pleasant then anyway) and trying again. I think we can assume that the whole issue is related to UAC and the restrictions if places on permissions... Cheers, Kim

I am having the same problem. Will give your solution a try. This really looks like a Microsoft design flaw. Tom Cooper

I have tried all the solutions above, but nothing helped. I still keep getting "please wait while windows configures Microsoft Office 2007" It does that every time I start any office application and can take about 5 minutes to complete, but works ok after it finishes. I am running Vista and only have this problem with MS Office. Tom Cooper
