Word 2003: Asian Layout Phonetic Guide is empty

I'm Using Word 2003 with documents containing Chinese characters.

I've always been able to display phonetics (pinyin or bopomofo /
zhuyin fuhao) next to each character using the 'Phonetic Guide'
function. (This function is under Format / Asian Layout).

I'm working on another system now though, and though it has the
function 'Phonetic Guide', and Chinese characters installed, it
doesn't show any ruby phonetics by default. (I.e. the fields 'Ruby
text' are empty while Word would always insert phonetics
automatically). It always did on my own PC. This is a very handy
feature that I rely on, to get the phonetics for Chinese characters
that I don't know.

What do I need to do to get these phonetics symbols automatically,
using the Phonetic Guide?

Hello, I'm using Word 2003 also with XP and am getting the same problem, but
I'm using the Japanese language. I'm also trying to find out how to fix this
problem.

From another user site I was offered the four below
suggestions below have had no positive results:

1) detect and repair from the Help menu with no improvement.

2) Chkdsk

3) Winword /a and winword /r

4) support.dot template

A co-worker has installed Word 2003 and his phonetic guide works with
Japanese, why I don't know?

Got the Phonetic guide to work again in Japanese for Word 2003

The procedure on how I got it to work again is
1. Install only Word 2002 from my previous Office XP disk.
2. Install the Office XP Language Pack for Japanese.
3. Reboot
4. Now both Word 2002 and Word 2003(I did not uninstall it before installing
Word 2002 again) have the phonetic guide working.
5. I probably will eventually uninstall Word 2002 when I know that Word 2003
is working as usual with the phonetic guide.
