Cannot follow a link, all else OK
harvlo 1/9/2007 5:18:01 PM
I installed the Beta 2007 Office Professional. I have had success with
virtually everything, however, in Outlook, although I can tell the software
is connecting to the internet because I get new emails--and I can click on
the email and it opens up--, if I get an email from say Dell, advertising
products, and I click on one of the products to follow the link, the link
will not work. It reads something like "general failure..."

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Sadly "something like general failure" really isn't very descriptive or
helpful. Would it be possible for you to post the entire error message
you're getting?

Thank you and sorry for my inarticulate post. I thought it might have been a
common bug. When I get a chance, I will write down the entire error message
and then post it.

Thank you, again, sir.

This is the entire error message,

General failure. The URL was:

Application not found.

The above was the message received when I clicked on a Dell laptop computer
advertisement. If the link was for something else, say a link to an ebay
tutorial, well, the same result as above occurs, but with different numbers
and letters only. It still reads General failure. The URL was:

Thank you.

This appears to be a default browser problem. In the two cases I found by
searching, the problem was solved by setting IE to be the default browser;
in one case by using "Set Program access and Defaults", and the other using
the "Programs" tab in "Internet Options":

Thanks very much, Hal. I will try it the first chance I get and let you know
the results.

Thanks, again.

Your recommended solution worked. I just went into Internet Options, set IE
to be the default browser, and the links worked just fine.

Thank you very much.

Re: Cannot follow a link, all else OK

I had a similar problem with a 3rd party browser called Maxthon. When I
uninstalled it I began having problems opening hyperlinks in my Outlook.

I was unable to fix it by making IE the default program, and further more
the add programs was "greyed out" and I could not change them.

I finally reinstalled the Maxthon browser and did not allow it to be set as
the default browser. I then checked the settings to make sure that IE was
indeed the default browser. I tested it with several e-mails and hyperlinks
and voila it worked. I could open the links with Outlook.

Then I uninstalled Maxthon again (2nd time) and when the uninstaller
prompted me to keep my settings I said no. (I remember that the first time I
performed the uninstall I kept the settings) The hyperlinks still work and IE
is the default program again...life is good.

I figured worst case I could leave Maxthon installed and just not use it.

Hope this helps, I see alot of you out there looking for an answer.
