Several of my correspondents are still clinging to AOL for their e-mail service and I guess that's their choice. The problem is that in several cases (not all) when I try to respond to these AOL users via my MS Outlook 2003 the following occurs:
1) Outlook hangs for about 20-30 seconds.
2) A window pops-up containing the following message: "Microsoft Word is set to be your e-mail editor. However, Word is unavailable, not installed, or is not the same version as Outlook. The Outlook editor will be used instead."
I have Office 2003 installed and it's running under Win XP-Pro/SP-2 with all the latest updates. In other words, MS Word is in fact available and, yes, it in fact is the same version as Outlook!
The Outlook editor is, of course, much less robust than the Word editor so I avoid using it whenever possible. To restore Word as my editor, I have to close out of and then restart Outlook -- a real waste of time. As near as I can tell, this occurs mainly whenever I attempting to reply to an incoming AOL message that contains HTML content.
Short of ignoring e-mails from correspondents hosted by AOL, does anyone have a solution to offer?

Have you tried registering Word?
In Start-> Run then type; Regsvr32.exe %Windir%\System32\Ole32.dll

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. All unsolicited mail sent to my personal account will be deleted without reading.

I am having the exact same problem. I have tested the problem AOL emails (more than one from more than one user) in several different environments with the same OS & SP as well as Outlook 2003 - all with current patches. I would like to find a solution. If anyone has any other ideas, please post them. I cannot find an AOL tech support address or member services address to send these symptoms to for help without paying for an AOL account.

AOL is a bugger with emails. And because you chose to use them for free, you also chose to do without free support. (I know this because my mom uses AOL for free and I helped her switch from a paid account to a free one.)

Milly:
Thanks for your suggestion; however, Word 2003 has been successfully configured as my editor in Outlook 2003 for over a year without any other issues except for the recent AOL issue as described in my first post.
None the less, I tried your suggestion of re-registering and, I’m sorry to say, the problem still exists -- tested against three separate AOL messages from three different individuals .
For now, I’ve simply moved on to Plan-B: not responding to any AOL messages I receive that contain HTML encoding! That's my low-tech solution for preventing Outlook from reverting to the built-in editor -- at least that's what I'm doing until something better comes along.
Regards, Ed
