Converting Word .doc files without Word.

I do not have Word installed on my computer, but people send me .doc files. My
usual word processing program does a fair job of opening them, except for images.

Is there any simple way to convert these .doc files to .rtf (preferably) or .pdf
files? I know one on-line site which will convert to .pdf, but it is limited in
the size of files that it will accept.

Microsoft offers the "Word viewer" for free at

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3657ce88-7cfa-457a-9aec-f4f827f20cac&DisplayLang=en

The Word viewer can view, print and copy, but not edit or save a Word
document.
Open the Word document in Word viewer, select all, copy, and try to
paste in your word processing program.

Thank you for the suggestion. I have downloaded the viewer, but I was hoping
for something which would (at the least) allow me to extract images. I have
tried two other routes which do give me at least that.

1) An other online .doc to .pdf converter, which I just found, that doesn't
limit the file size. Once in .pdf it is rather easy to get the images.

2) Open Office. I tried saving one of the files as .rtf, but when I open that
in my usual word processor (WordPerfect) the images are not scaled properly. At
least I can edit the document if I wish.
