1. Font formatting -- kerning and all caps are new PPT 2007 features. They do not transfer when you open the file in 2003.
Sounds to me like you have applied those settings to placeholders and want 2003 users to be able to use those settings. Sorry, but that's not gonna happen.
I'll get back on the backgrounds/layouts.
