The troubleshooting we have tried so far: *Disabling all startup items in safe mode and restarting the computer in normal mode. (This does not help.) *Downloading the updates for Office 2003 in safe mode with networking. (They would only download, not install.)
We looked in task manager while in normal mode, and there is a svchost.exe file using 99% of the CPU. Now, the first instinct would be to say there is spyware running on my machine, BUT
My machine was running perfectly fine until we installed Office 2003, and I scan for spyware, viruses, and adware with a professional program on a daily basis with a program that is updated daily.
I have also done research online, and I am not the only one who has experienced this problem. Unfortunately, my research did not reveal a solution to the problem.
Do you have one? Please? I am a medical transcriptionist, and this is costing me tonight's shift, but they really, REALLY need me on the weekends.
Thank you for any and all assistance! Carol

Sorry, Carol, that I can only commiserate with you. ;-( I've spent one whole day yesterday trying to fix this kind of problem on my PC. What looked like a charm turned into nightmare.

I actually got mine working again. What I ended up having to do is: Uninstall the .NET framework, and then reinstall the .NET framework, go to Microsoft Update, and let it download all the updates for .NET framework. Ever since I did that, everything has been working great!
NOTE: if you have an ATI Radeon sound card, uninstalling the .NET framework will disable your sound card temporarily until you reainstall the .NET framework.
Hope that helps! It worked for me! *shakes head* Quirky things, aren't they?

Thank you, Carol, for your worthwhile info! Since I was interested only to use Excel and Word I deleted all the other programs that came on the disk. It solved my PC problem ;-). would have liked to know though what caused the problem specifically?! It should not have been so frustrating. Thanks!
