Hello,
1) Not sure what your definitions of "Outlook files" and "other document files" are. So I'll make some assumptions. If by Outlook files you mean your e-mail, contacts, and calendar information, then they **should** be preserved when you uninstall 2007 Beta. These items are kept in one file called the "pst" file. However, I would highly advise that you copy your "pst" file some place safe before you uninstall (copy it when Outlook is not running). That will protect your e-mail, contacts, etc. in case something unexpected happens. You can find where your pst file is kept by opening Outlook and clicking on "Tools - Account Settings". Then click on the "Data Files" tab. There you will see the path to the pst file. Note that I am also assuming you are not in an office setting and connected to an Exchange server (otherwise the instructions would be different). Next, if by "other document files" you mean your Word documents, or Excel spreadsheets then the answer is uninstalling Office 2007 Beta will not delete those files. But it never hurts to back them up first...besides, you should be backing them up regardless, right? One important point to be aware of when going from Office 2007 back to an older version. The 2007 versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint all default to a new format. So, unless you had changed the default format to the older version supported by Office 2003, the files you created while using Office 2007 Beta will be in a format Office 2003 cannot recognize by default. However, the good news is Microsoft provides a free utility that allows older versions of Office to open the new format. Just something to remember before you panic when trying to open a Word 2007 file with Word 2003.
Oh, and yes, your documents will automatically be referenced by Office 2007. Unless you are also upgrading to Vista, the default location of your documents is the same in Office 2003 and 2007 (that's actually more of an operating system thing than an Office thing...Vista changes things around...but that's a different topic).
2) Assuming you have the original Office 2003 CD, you should not have to re-install Office 2003 before upgrading to Office 2007. The install program will ask you to insert your Office 2003 disk at some point during the 2007 installation. But I am not 100% positive as I have not gone through the exact scenario you are here. I have either installed Office 2007 on a "fresh" system or upgraded directly from Office 2003 (without the 2007 Beta stuck in the middle). You are correct to consider the upgrade version of Office 2007 versus the full version. Since you already own Office 2003 you are entitled to the less expensive version.
Hope that helps.

Initially I had Microsoft Office Basic Edition 2003 installed on my computer, I then participated in the BETA 2007 Office suite, which meant at the time uninstalling my Basic Edition 2003 office suite, and reinstalling the BETA version. I now have two options since the BETA version support ends: 1) to revert back to the Basic Edition I have or 2) to get a Office 2007 suite (say Standard Edition). My questions are a) If I uninstall the current BETA Office 2007 (which is required), will all my Outlook files and other document files be preserved and be automatically referenced when I install either of the aforementioned versions. The second question is, if I decide to go with an upgrade version (cheaper) would I need to reinstall my Office Basic Edition 2003 first so that the upgrade works?
Any help with these questions would be appreciated. -- Gadfly

#2: no, inserting the disc should be enough
#1: If you upgrade, settings should be preserved even if you uninstall the beta first.

Hi Tim, You sound knowledgeable about the 2003 and 2007 Office Suites. When I bought my laptop I got 2003 Office already installed. Then, in anticipation of working from home I bought and installed Office Professional 2007. I'm taking an online course that requires 2003. I had to re-purchase 2003, but don't know how to install 2003 without de-installing 2007. If I de-install 2007 will it screw up data or my computer? Is there a safe way to install 2003 in a different directory so I can run both on the same computer? Thanks, Flycliffyboo

You can try installing it but generally you need to install Office in the order of their release.
