Is there a way I can open or convert files from office 97 and earlier in
office 2007?

Office 97 files should be openable in most if not all of the Office 2007
apps.

Earlier versions won't be, at least on some of the Office 2007 apps.

You don't say which apps you're concerned with, so a more specific answer
isn't possible.

In any case, you'll probably have to find an earlier copy of Office or get
someone who has one to open older files and resave them in a more current
format.

I am concerned about opening word 95 and earlier in 2007. I work at an
education institute and our professors have very old documents they need to
modify.

Then my answer applies. You can't open Office 95 documents in Office 2007.
You'll have to find an intermediate version to do the conversion.

While you're at it, you might want to use the opportunity to alert them
to the dangers of storing important information in file formats that
become obsolete. This has been a known risk in business and academia for
at least 30 years and it has improved only marginally with the use of
XML for office documents.

See http://epu.ucc.ie/doc/markup for an explanation.

Since you suggested Open Office in another thread, do you happen to know whether
it'll open PPT95 files? If so, it might be a lot simpler to install and use it
than to find an older legal version of PPT.

I haven't tried, but I see no reason why not. It opens pretty much
everything I throw at it.
