Word 2007 grammar check not finding missing punctuation

Word 2007 is not finding missing periods at the end of sentences. Under the
Office button - Word Options - Proofing - Grammar, all items, including
Punctuation, are checked. I have installed Office 2007 Service Pack 1. This
problem is occuring on multiple PCs. Has anyone else noticed this problem?
If so, have you found the solution?

How can a computer program know when a written sentence has ended?

Interesting question. Detecting two spaces after one another might raise
a question, an unexpected Capital letter at the beginning of a Word, but
a sure proof way ...

Doubel spaces at the end of sentences is a no-no with proportional-pitch
fonts. And capitalized words appear within sentences all the time
