Over the last year or so I have been cloning a small number of drives (maybe 1 a month) from a master setup drive and then using a third-party tool to change the Windows XP Pro product key for each client system.
I use a hardware cloning device and have been updating the master drive with new drivers and software as I went. Occasionally I would be prompted to re-activate due to new hardware configuration. Now I am being told that this key has been reactivated too many times and I need to enter a new key. I did some research and now realize that I should have been using sysprep all along. I think I understand the general procedure but have a few questions about updating the master drive:
1. Can I convert my master drive that has already been activated, and now has an over-used product code into a proper master drive for use with sysprep? I would like to avoid starting from scratch.
2. When setting up a master drive are you supposed to have a deticated product key for the master? Are you supposed to activate it? If not, how do you continue making updates to the master drive past the 30-day activation period?
Thanks for the help, Eric
