I am trying to use a 64bit vista install disc, with a 32bit key, it
installs but wont activate.
Is it because I have activated this copy of windows on my home PC?
(with my own 64bit key)
I thought the copy of windows was independent of the key being used to
activate?
The only option I have is to install from a 32bit 'branded' OEM copy of
vista, with associated logo's but I would rather not.
So is there anything I can do to activate the 64bit copy of windows,
with the 32bit key that came with the laptop I am installing it on.
Any advice would be appreciated thanks.

Since the OEM vendors do not purchase licenses that are good for both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Vista the odds are that you can not upgrade your 64bit capabable computer to 64 bit Vista using the product key that came on the sticker on the computer. Hi Disorder,
The factory installed version of the operating system was most likely
an image, i.e. the same as on a great number of machines from that
manufacturer.
This would contain a product key and activation code from the
manufacturer - they will also be on the "recovery" partition or discs
that came with the laptop.
If you wish to use a proper MS install dvd and the product key
stickered on the outside of the machine, this is normally a different
key and you need to ring the manufacturer to get it activated. You would
need to ensure you have the drivers for the exact model of laptop -
normally available from the manufacturers website.
You may prefer to install from the "recovery" dvd and use this handy
free tool to help remove the stuff you don't want:
'Download | The PC Decrapifier'
When it is setup the way you like, you can make your own image for
future restoration. You can use any number of commercial tools for this
- many have free versions will do the basic job.
This free version of Macrium Reflect works on 32 or 64 bit systems and
is excellent. The paid version has even more functions, of course.
'Macrium Reflect Free Edition 4.2 build 2033 - Downloads - ZDNet
Australia'
Hope it helps

I think you misread me slightly;
1. the 64bit copy of vista i have is a standard install cd that came
with my quadcore, not a oem or branded copy, im installing it because of
this reason. Note I am not install the 64bit vista on any of my own
machines, I chose to use xp64 instead of the vista64 that came with it.
2. the oem/branded copies of 32bit i have. have a cd-key embedded in
them and self activate, both copies are from my laptops, they also have
a lot of extra crap+oob extras that I dont want, i wanted a plain
install.
3. the person who I'm trying to help can't find their copy/dvd. they
have a 32bit key on the bottom of their laptop which i am trying to
install my un-branded copy of 64bit with
4. there is no recovery partition on their computer, its just a 70gb
hdd with 1 partition which is the installed drive (i made it that way*)
*Im computer literate and I know what I'm doing :)
basically all im trying to do is activate a 64bit copy of windows with
a 32bit key, if 32bit keys dont work on 64bit versions (even though they
install ok) then that is all I need to know.
if its some other reason it wont activate then I am trying to find that
out.
thanks for replies

If you had a Retail version of Vista, you could do what you are trying to do.
"Braned" OEM versions are cheaper than Retail versions of Vista, so it does not work that way(getting freee 64bit version as well).
Contact your computer manufacturer re obtaining a 64bit version of your "branded" OEM. -- Mad Mike

Hi,
As far as I know, 32 bit keys work with 64 bit dvd's and vice versa.
Curious may be right in that it varies according to manufacturer.
However, I think the problem you are having is because the key
stickered on the bottom / side of an oem machine can usually only be
activated by ringing the manufacturer.
Hope this helps

it must have been a mis-typed key when i installed it, i retyped the
one on the sticker into the 'activate now' area and its activated ok :)
