Windows xp screen freezing...randomly
Hello,
I have spare computer that I installed xp on about a month ag and for some
reason once in a while the screen freezes when I type something on the
keyboard.
It doesn't matter what key I touch or what program is running
It could be a text file or typing a run command or an internet address as
soon as I hit the first key the screen freezes and so does the mouse so I

Rebuilding OE from Thunderbird
I thought Thunderbird was a real whiz-bang piece of software which could
resolve some OE-type issues for me and it turns out it can't. In the
meantime, when I installed Thunderbird all of my addresses were imported, all
emails and folders were imported and all contact information was imported

No Files in Prefetch
Something happened along the way and I noticed there are no files in
the c:\windows\prefetch.
The proper entries are in the registry:

Compacting folders
I've reached the point where every time I exit OE I'm asked if I want to
compact my folders to save space. The answer is, and will be, no. I have
plenty of space, back up often, and run Outlook Express Quick Backup. No
sweat.
How can I stop the program from repeatedly asking me if I want to back up
the folders?

Access Denied when using a .bat file
I have a .bat file setup to use xcopy to copy some files from my hard drive
to a CD. i has been working for the better part of a year. Recently when I
try to run it, using a shortcut, I get a message the says 'Access Denied'
when it trys to copy the first file. If I manually copy it to the CD it
works but won't work with the .bat file.

Formatted hardrive no driver for modem
Hi my dad unistalled everything and reformatted the hard drive. I am trying
to install a router for the broadband and pc keeps saying the modem isnt
working, I cant roll it back as no saves were made and I cant find a driver
that I can download as obviously no internet, I am having to connect through
my laptop. I have the cd that came with windows xp but it hasnt worked.

system process locks ntuser.dat
I'm having a problem with three different users that I just can't figure out.
All of my PCs are running XP SP3. Most users simply log off at the end of
the day, but these three users reboot. When they come in the next morning
they get logged on with a default profile, and when using Process Explorer I
see that "system" has ntuser.dat under C:\Documents and Settings\%username%

Multiple BSODs on boot/startup
I get multiple BSODs when i start the system. The most common ones are
page_fault_in_non_paged_area, irql_not_les_or_equal, bsod regarding some
klif.sys file
Lately i got a "fatal system error" BSOD and a "Memory_management" one.

software application recovery
I can see the application Excel in the C:\Backup folder created during a full
system restore with backup, but obviously it won’t run!! - Is there a way to
re-install or restore one program (Excel 2003) from this directory, thru some

complete uninstall
Using windows XP with SP 3. Had difficulty with computer. Message stated it
was a Roxio problem. So I uninstalled Roxio, but evidently wasn't completely
uninstalled, as when I tried to reinstall, message says "not compatable with

Search Results Window keeps randomly popping up
I had a problem with the little guy & dog window popping up randomly on my XP
system. I had an IT guy reformat the drive and reinstall XP, it is still
happening. I am absolutely sure it is not malware, virus etc. It will just

Personal Settings
When a software was installed remotely, I lost my personal settings. Now I
cannot have a wallpaper, or customize MSN to login automatically, remember my
account and password, etc.

Problem with taskbar in XP Pro (Tablet PC Edition)
Hi folks... for no particular reason my programs have started appearing on
my taskbar *twice* (I have *two* program task bars). Nothing shows up if I
go look at the toolbar menu - it only show (correctly) that I have Quick
Launch and Language Bar on.
It's very annoying... any ideas on what I could do to make the second one
disappear? I want my taskbar real estate back! :-)

Virus turned off active desktop - how to restore

Wireless connection drops and won't reconnect after SP3
Hi all,
Hope this is the right place for help on this.
Since installing SP3 on XP my wireless connection randomly drops. I can't
pinpoint exactly what causes it to happen/triggers it
but the only fix I know of is simply to reboot.
When it happens I can still see the router but when clicking on connect it
just stays on connecting for ages and never connects.

No internet after removing Antivirus 2009
I work with Windows Xp Media Center Edition.
Yesterday I removed Antivirus 2009 with Malwarebytes.
Since then I cannot connect with the internet.
The system is very slow (I think it is constant trying to connect to the

DEP execution error, and Windows Explorer closes down

I hope this is the correct newsgroup. I have a customer who has downloaded
their pictures from the festive season into their My Pictures folder. There
are some .AVI files mixed in amongst his photos, as he has used the camera's
movie function. When he tries to access the folder that contains these

Everybody rightly criticizes Micro$tiff for selling a crappy OS, and

Cannot Send Attachments
HI There,
I have cleaned out all my temp files and so on, i have
scanned for viruses, nothing shows up, but when i send and email out
from either Outlook Express 6 or Verizon Yahoo with an attachment, the
email will not go through. The email will go through just fine without
