Is there a freeware VNC app for Windows?
While I am pretty comfortable on my Mac, but have a lot to learn on
Windows, I have a pal who is new to computing and to Windows, bit of
an old timer, like me, and I'd like to help her out.
I used to use two freeware VNC programs to help out pals when using my
Mac:
Share My Desktop (server program) and
Chicken of the VNC (client program).
Is there any free software like this that I ...

Frozen on "shutting down" screen
I left the computer on last night and today found it frozen on a blue screen
with the message "Windows is shutting down." Holding down the power button
doesn't do anything. Neither does the ctrl-alt-esc Force-Quit command I'm
used to using with frozen Macs. Can I "force" the machine to finish shutting
down, or force it to restart? I've used a PC at work before, but this is my

PDC 3070 Polaroid VISTA drivers
Is there ANYONE here that can tell me where the h311 I can find the VISTA
driver for this camera?
Polaroid has a pretty good camera, but they dont like to support, or taking
the time to set up the drivers needed to continue using the camera......
Hmmmm, sounds like they do this on purpose so you have to buy a NEW camera....
whatever! anyway, I need the driver. can anyone help?

Using old hardware with new system
Does anyone know if it's possible to use an old 16 bit scanner with XP?
This scanner had it's own serial card but I'm wondering if I could get a
DB25 serial plug to USB adapter and still use the scanner. It works fine
and I hate to just throw it away.

Network Connection
When I go into wireless connextion only two come out Local Area Connection
and 1394 Connection. What I need is the wireless connection. How do I add
that? The only options it gives me is for regular connection or a wireless
network....

bios boot order not respected
have installed a new hard drive at the advise of HP for pavilion zd8000
laptop, as original HD failed BIOS comprehensive test after crash. Made
install with recommended new HDD, BIOS recognizes and HDD passed test, but
unable to reboot (restore) with XP pro system disc provided with original

Using a New User Account
I read an interesting exchange here recently where it was noted that
one is best advised NOT to routinely log in and use Windows on an
administrative account.
If I understood the thread correctly, it suggested that one is better
advised to create a non-admin user account and use that instead,
switching to an admin account only for those times when you need to
install news software, etc.

Windows will not shut down until I restart it
Hello
I tried to find the newsgroups FAQ but no luck so here goes:
I think I may have a program that is hanging up because when I press
Start>Turn off computer It goes through the steps until it gets to
"Windows is shutting down" and there stops. I have to manually push the
restart button and wait for it to start up again and then press
Start>Turn off Computer whereby it shuts do...

Windows XP on Vista machine - hibernate function
I've been mulling over a little problem. I bought a
Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop with Vista on it. I put up
with Vista as long as possible (until it completely
folded up and there was no method of restoring it.)
I got some XP install disks and used the license
from a defunct laptop to install XP. All legal and
agreed to by Microsoft.

Speaker Settings in XP Pro
im clicking on the little speaker down on the right side bottom. I right
click on the speaker and use (adjust audio properties) then (speaker)
settings. Then I hit the Advance tab. Then (Speaker setup) I pick
quadraphonic then hit apply. Then ok again then go to listen to music and
only two speakers work. So I reboot and go back to what i just did and it's

When I click on "Windows firewall" I get the message "Windows firewawll
cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you

Deleting a User Account
Is it possible to delete the Guest Account? As the Administrator I go to the
control panel and open user accounts. When I open the limited user account
it has an option for "delete this account". When I open the guest user
account it does not have a delete option. I can only turn it off or on.
Also, the Guest Account contains many of my (administrator) desktop icons
like itunes and ...

Installing applications on a new XP-Pro installation
On a new, clean, single-user XP-Pro SP2 installation, which is the
better approach:
1) Install applications as a user (which seems to be the default for new
XP-Pro installs), or
2) Install applications as administrator [once you have figured out how
to make the hidden XP-Pro administrator log-in visible (I used TweakUI)]?
Why is one method better than the other?

Cannot migrate from W98 to XP Pro.
When XP Pro checks system compatability get message:
W.XP Pro. stup does not support upgrade from W 98 tp XP Pro. Setup cannot
continue.

Menu Language
I re-installed Windows XP and some of the menus have a different language
(appears to be arabic, turkish, or something like that). Some of the
specifice menus are Firewall, Wireless, and others.

I just installed xp again and did some downloads from Microsoft update and

i need help, audio problem.

Deleted computer still in ofline files dialog box.
I changed out workstations and my notebook (both XP Pro SP3) continues
to look for the old computer. I've deleted all the files related to
the old computer in the offline files folder. I've also tried
stopping using offlines files, deleted everything, restarted and then
started offline file selections from scratch. The problem still
exists.
I'm at my wit's end....

System restore in xp home
I am a newbie especially when using system restore.
Anyway, I can never get system restore to work in xp.
I downloaded the 8.1.3 version of adobe reader and after the program was
installed, the computer would not work right.
I had read a post about system restore and the solution was to put the
computer in safe mode.
I did that and system restore worked great.
No adobe icon on the deskto...

I went to burn a cdr for audio cd using wmp9 and got an error message;
"Windows Media Player cannot burn the files to the CD. Verify that the disc
is clean and not damaged. If necessary, select a slower recording speed or
try a different brand of blank discs."
