Automatic updates cause system instability
I just did a fresh install of XP. My XP installation CD is pretty ancient,
pre-SP1. Everything goes fine, right up through installing SP2, but when
Automatic Updates does the next install after SP2, the OS freezes during
initialization after the restart. I was using an old hand-me-down hard drive
at first, so I thought maybe it was losing data integrity. I wanted a bigger
one anyway, so ...

I had a hard disk problem, afterwards the file windows/system32/config/system
was corrupted and I had to reinstall and repair XP Home. At a certain moment
I got stuck because XP keeps asking me the administrator password (which I
never defined) in order to finish the job. Blank is not valid. I tried to
look in the setupact.log but no reference to password changes....

same NIC, so I think it's because of this... but this doesn't help me,
because they are onboard)... so, I get a PXE-E51 -> "no DHCP or proxyDHCP
offers were received" ... what can I do? I try to use a WDS and until now it
always worked... but not for the new machines...

XP Pro Showing Task Manager not Windows Security window

I've got a really strange problem where a Windows XP Pro machine joined to a
domain is displaying the Task Manager rather than the Windows Security Window
when CTRL+ALT+DEL is pressed.
Normally this happens when the machine isn't in on a Domain, but this one
is. Since it's in Domain mode, there isn't the option of displaying the
Welcome screen (which is usually how you'd change t...

The nitty gritty of XP boot loaders (VERY LONG!)

experienced at various OS and boot configurations, but this one had me
